Steeple is a small village and civil parish on the Dengie peninsula in the Maldon district of Essex, England. It sits close to the salt marshes and mudflats of the River Blackwater estuary, so the landscape is dominated by intertidal habitats that attract birdwatchers, sailors and those interested in coastal ecology.
The village retains a rural, agricultural character with a handful of hamlets and historic buildings; its name recalls the prominent church tower that long marked the settlement. Locally notable is the nearby hamlet of Stansgate with Stansgate House, associated with the Benn family, and the area’s economy continues to combine farming, small-scale tourism and recreational boating alongside the wider estuary traditions of fishing and salt production around Maldon.
