Foulness is a sparsely populated island parish in the borough of Rochford, Essex, off the coast of England in the Thames Estuary. Much of the island is low-lying saltmarsh and grazing marsh, prized for birdlife and coastal habitat and shaped by tides, sea defences and a strong sense of remoteness.
The local economy is chiefly agricultural, but the island’s character has been heavily influenced by a long-standing Ministry of Defence presence and live-firing areas that have limited development and access. That mix of farming, important wildlife, coastal change and military history – with traces of older settlements and wartime defences – gives Foulness an unusual, quietly distinctive feel.
