Down Ampney is a small village in the Cotswold district of Gloucestershire, England, set in the gentle vale a few miles east of Cirencester. It feels typically Cotswold: honey‑coloured stone houses clustered around a medieval parish church, surrounded by flat, agricultural land that makes the area valued for farming and quiet rural living.
The village is best known as the birthplace of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams and retains musical associations with occasional concerts and a memorial in the church; the parish church of St Michael and All Angels contains medieval fabric and listed features. The nearby site of RAF Down Ampney marks its Second World War role as a transport airfield. Today the economy is largely agricultural with some tourism and commuters travelling to Swindon and Cirencester, making it a peaceful spot prized for history and the countryside.
