Cricklade in Wiltshire, England sits at the headwaters of the River Thames, where the smaller River Churn feeds the system, and is often described as the most northerly town on the Thames. The settlement has visible Saxon and medieval earthworks and a fine parish church, and sits beside important floodplain meadows such as North Meadow, famous for spring carpets of snake’s‑head fritillaries and other wildflowers.
Historically a market and agricultural centre, Cricklade still feels like a small town of independent shops and community groups while serving as a gateway to the Cotswolds and a commuter base for nearby Swindon. Walking routes including the Thames Path bring visitors, and local events and conservation of wetlands and meadows play a big part in the town’s character and economy.
