Stroud is a market town and civil parish in the steep, wooded valleys of Gloucestershire on the edge of the Cotswolds in England. Sited where a number of fast-flowing streams meet, its dramatic slopes and Victorian mill buildings reflect a history rooted in woollen cloth manufacture and water-powered industry, and many former mills have been repurposed into workshops, galleries and homes.
Today Stroud is well known for a lively independent scene, strong community activism and a thriving arts and food culture – farmers' markets, craft shops and music venues feature alongside environmental and co‑operative initiatives. Its proximity to countryside and waymarked trails makes it popular with walkers, while the town’s creative and alternative spirit gives it a distinctive social and economic character within the wider district.
