Calne is a traditional market town in north‑west Wiltshire, England, set on the small River Marden in a gentle limestone valley. The town retains a compact historic centre with Georgian and Victorian buildings around a market place, reflecting its long history as a local trading and cloth‑working centre; the grand Palladian park of Bowood House lies just to the south and is a notable local landmark.
Historically the town became well known for bacon curing and pork‑processing, though its industrial role has diminished and it today functions partly as a commuter and service centre within easy reach of Bath, Swindon and the M4 corridor. Calne still has a lively community life, local shops and events that celebrate its rural Wiltshire character.
