Barton on Sea is a small coastal village on the Hampshire coast near New Milton in the New Forest district, looking out over the Solent towards the Isle of Wight. It is best known for its low boulder‑clay cliffs and pebble beaches, where ongoing erosion and occasional fossil finds attract walkers, amateur palaeontologists and birdwatchers; the cliff‑top coastal path and a golf course give wide sea views.
Originally a modest Victorian/Edwardian seaside settlement, Barton on Sea is now largely residential with a strong retirement and holiday‑home presence, supported by local shops, a community centre and small tourism businesses. Mid‑20th‑century cliff‑stabilisation works have shaped the modern shoreline, and the village benefits from close links to New Milton and the broader leisure and nature offerings of the New Forest.
