Lyndhurst is the informal "capital" of the New Forest, a compact village and civil parish in Hampshire, England. Nestled where heathland meets ancient woodland, it sits at a network of old roads and has long acted as a market and administrative centre for the forest; ponies, cattle and deer commonly graze or stroll through the streets and nearby commons.
Today the village is driven by tourism and local services, with a busy High Street of independent shops, pubs and cafes and visitor facilities such as the New Forest Centre. It remains a hub for walkers, cyclists and riders, and the commoning traditions and historic character of the area are still important to the local economy and social life; Lyndhurst is also conveniently close to larger centres such as Southampton and Winchester.
