Twyford is a small village and civil parish a few miles south‑east of Winchester in Hampshire, England. It sits on chalk downland above the headwaters of the River Itchen and is bordered by Twyford Down, an area of species‑rich chalk grassland and prehistoric earthworks that give the locality a distinctive natural and archaeological character.
The down made national headlines in the early 1990s when the M3 was cut through it, provoking well‑known conservation protests; that legacy has left a strong local interest in landscape and wildlife protection. Today Twyford combines rural farming roots with commuter living for Winchester and Southampton, a handful of village amenities such as a church and pub, and active community groups focussed on preserving the chalk‑stream and downland heritage.
