The small rural parish of Ganarew sits on the eastern edge of Herefordshire, overlooking limestone escarpments that drop towards the River Wye and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It occupies part of the ridge-and-woodland country of the Welsh Marches, with viewpoints such as nearby Little Doward giving sweeping views towards Monmouth and into Wales.
Locally the community is small and close-knit, with agriculture still important alongside a modest tourism trade for walkers, climbers and river users drawn by the scenery and the Offa's Dyke Path. Historic touches - notably the modest medieval St Swithin's Church and remnants of ancient earthworks on the surrounding hills - lend the parish a quiet sense of layered history.
