Ebbw Vale in Blaenau Gwent sits high in the South Wales Valleys, a compact former industrial town tucked into the Ebbw valley and surrounded by rolling uplands. It grew up around coal mining and a large steelworks that shaped the landscape and local identity through the 19th and 20th centuries, and traces of that industrial heritage are still visible around the town.
Since the decline of heavy industry, regeneration has been a big theme: the reopening of the Ebbw Valley Railway reconnected the area with Cardiff and has supported new retail, business and cultural projects. The community remains close-knit, with a strong local sporting and cultural life that honours its mining and steelworking past while looking towards a more diverse, post‑industrial future.
