The Golden Valley South ward lies in west Herefordshire, following the course of the River Dore and opening out to rolling farmland with long views towards the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. The landscape is characteristically rural, with scattered hamlets and a number of historic sites that draw walkers and history buffs, notably the medieval remains at Abbey Dore and the Neolithic chamber known as Arthur's Stone.
Economically the area is dominated by mixed farming, small rural enterprises and a modest tourism trade; village halls, community-run pubs and seasonal agricultural shows help bind local life together. Transport is limited by narrow lanes and few bus services, so many residents commute to Hereford or Abergavenny, and local initiatives often focus on maintaining services, broadband and facilities to support an ageing and dispersed population.
