Blackwood is a former coal-mining town in Caerphilly County Borough in south-east Wales, sitting in the slopes of the Sirhowy Valley. It grew rapidly in the 19th century as part of the South Wales Coalfield, and its compact town centre and surrounding hills still reflect that industrial past and the tight-knit valley community that developed around it.
Today Blackwood functions as a local commercial hub and a commuter base within easy reach of both Cardiff and Newport, with shops, leisure facilities and walking routes into the surrounding countryside. Cultural life retains echoes of its mining heritage through community events and local projects, while recent regeneration has focused on retail, small businesses and improving public spaces.
