Tredegar in Blaenau Gwent sits in the steep-sided Sirhowy Valley in the South Wales Valleys. The town expanded rapidly in the 19th century around coal, iron and steel industries, and the built environment - rows of terraced housing and old works sites along the valley floor - still reflects that industrial past amid reclaimed hillsides and winding valley lanes.
Tredegar is widely known as the birthplace of Aneurin Bevan, whose experience with the local Tredegar Medical Aid Society helped shape the NHS, and his memory remains important locally. Today the town mixes community traditions - rugby, brass bands and the Victorian charm of Bedwellty Park with its conservatory and bandstand - with ongoing regeneration, public‑sector employment and small‑scale industry as it adjusts from its heavy‑industrial roots.
