Brynmawr in Blaenau Gwent, Wales perches on a high ridge at the head of the South Wales Valleys, giving the town unexpectedly wide views and easy access to upland walking towards the Brecon Beacons. It grew rapidly in the 19th century with coal, iron and associated industries and still carries that industrial heritage in its streets and former works sites.

The town is also known for early social experiments in relief and community regeneration after the First World War, often referred to as the Brynmawr Experiment, and like many former valley communities it has seen waves of economic change, decline and local regeneration. Today it feels like a small, resilient community with local events, walking routes and links to neighbouring towns such as Ebbw Vale and Abergavenny.
