Penyard is a largely rural ward in south‑eastern Herefordshire, sitting to the east of Ross-on-Wye and close to the western edge of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire. The landscape is a mix of rolling farmland, hedgerows and pockets of ancient woodland, with limestone outcrops and a number of public footpaths that make it popular for walking and countryside recreation.
The area has a quietly historic feel, with old farmsteads, cottages and remnants of prehistoric earthworks on local high ground, and an economy still rooted in agriculture alongside small local businesses and commuters travelling to nearby towns. Community life tends to revolve around village halls, pubs and parish activities, giving it a close‑knit, rural character.
