Mitcheldean is a small town on the northern edge of the Forest of Dean in western Gloucestershire, England. Set against mixed woodland and rolling hills, it developed from medieval origins where local timber, charcoal and small-scale ironworking and coal extraction shaped the landscape; traces of that industrial past survive alongside well used walking and cycling routes through the forest.
Today Mitcheldean combines a tight‑knit community with local shops, pubs, a primary school and community groups, and an economy that mixes light manufacturing, services and a modest visitor trade linked to the forest. It’s within reasonable commuting distance of larger centres such as Gloucester, but retains a distinctly small‑town feel with regular local events and easy access to the outdoor attractions of the Forest of Dean.
