Markyate is a small village in the district of Dacorum in Hertfordshire, England, sitting on the northern fringe of the Chiltern Hills close to the border with Bedfordshire. It straddles the old route of Watling Street (the A5), giving it good road links and making it a popular commuter base for nearby Luton and London while retaining a distinctly rural feel.
Markyate has a noteworthy medieval past - its priory and the story of Christina of Markyate are local highlights - and the village centre still shows historic cottages, a parish church and a handful of pubs and shops. The local economy is largely residential with some agriculture and equestrian activity, supported by small businesses and an active village community that stages occasional events.
