Markyate is a village and civil parish in the borough of Dacorum, Hertfordshire, England, lying close to the county border with Bedfordshire and within easy reach of St Albans and Luton. The settlement grew up around a medieval priory and a coaching-route lane, and is remembered for the medieval anchoress Matilda of Markyate; remnants of its historic core sit alongside later Victorian and 20th‑century development.
Today Markyate mixes historic buildings and rural character with commuter-friendly housing, many residents travelling to nearby towns or to London. The village retains local shops, pubs and active community groups and is popular with walkers and cyclists exploring the surrounding lanes and countryside.
