Great Amwell is a village in East Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire, England, lying just south of Ware beside the River Lee. It grew up around local springs that fed the 17th‑century New River, the engineered watercourse that helped supply London, and you can still find a medieval parish church and other reminders of its long rural history.
Once mainly agricultural, the village is now largely residential with many commuters, while nearby sites such as Rye House and the Lee Valley gravel‑pit lakes have become important for birdlife and local recreation; community events and conservation efforts help retain its village character.
