Stanstead Abbotts is a riverside village in the borough of East Hertfordshire, Hertfordshire, England, sitting on the banks of the River Lee in the Lea Valley. It lies beside Stanstead St Margarets and close to Hoddesdon, with waterside walks, locks and meadowland that give the area a strong outdoor and nature feel, with nearby reserves such as Rye Meads and the wider Lee Valley offering birdlife and recreational boating.
Historically the village grew around riverside mills and its name reflects past church ownership, and many Victorian terraces and riverside buildings still characterise the centre. Today it is largely residential with local shops, pubs and community groups, a modest industrial past and a commuter connection to London; nearby Rye House also adds a touch of 17th‑century history to the neighbourhood.
