Freshwater and Totland

Freshwater, on the west coast of the Isle of Wight, is best known for its dramatic chalk scenery: the sweep of Freshwater Bay, the ridge of Tennyson Down and the sea stacks of The Needles just offshore. It has strong literary and historic connections - Alfred Lord Tennyson lived at Farringford and the landscape has long attracted walkers and artists - and today combines National Trust sites and beachside tourism with a still-active rural hinterland of farms and small businesses.

Neighbouring Totland sits around the sheltered curve of Totland Bay and feels quieter and more residential, with a small harbour, sailing, holiday parks and a village-centre economy geared to visitors and retirees. Its location close to Yarmouth and the island’s ferry links helps sustain local shops and cafés, while the seaside setting and promenades make it a popular low-key holiday spot rather than a busy resort.
