St. Mary's

St Mary's is the largest and most populated island in the Isles of Scilly, acting as the archipelago's administrative and transport hub. The main settlement of Hugh Town clusters around the harbour with shops, cafés and a quay for ferries to Penzance, plus a small airport linking the islands to the Cornish mainland; the permanent population is under two thousand but the community swells in summer.

Geographically it mixes low granite outcrops and sheltered sandy beaches such as Porthcressa, with historic features around the Old Town reflecting a long maritime past. The local economy is built on tourism, small-scale horticulture and fishing, and island life is marked by a close-knit social scene, seasonal events and cultural fixtures like the Isles of Scilly Museum.
