The Isles of Scilly unitary authority is a tiny archipelago off the tip of Cornwall, about 45 km south‑west of Land's End. Although there are many islets, only five are permanently inhabited - St Mary’s, Tresco, St Martin’s, Bryher and St Agnes - and the landscape is famed for a remarkably mild climate, sub‑tropical gardens such as Tresco Abbey Garden, rich seabird colonies and a mosaic of protected sites (SSSIs and bird sanctuaries) within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Archaeological remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Age and the compact historic harbours and fortifications around Hugh Town give the islands a strong sense of layered history despite their small size.
With a resident population of only a few thousand the authority is the smallest unitary council in England by population, and the local economy is dominated by tourism, flower and bulb farming and small‑scale fishing. Transport links are provided by ferries and air services to the mainland (notably to Penzance), and life on the islands is shaped by close‑knit communities, a pronounced seasonal economy and ongoing efforts to balance visitor pressure with conservation and island services. The council performs the full range of local government functions while the islands remain ceremonially associated with Cornwall.
