Detling is a small village and civil parish on the scarp of the North Downs in Kent, about five miles north‑east of Maidstone. Sitting above the Medway Valley, the village and its hill offer wide panoramas towards the Thames estuary on clear days and a characteristically chalky landscape; the busy A249 runs close by, linking the area to Sittingbourne and the larger towns of the county.
The village has a strong local identity centred on its church, pub and community events, and the nearby showground has long been used for agricultural shows and seasonal gatherings. Historically the site of RAF Detling in the twentieth century, the area retains reminders of that wartime past while combining rural life with good road links to Maidstone and the surrounding economy.
