Fence is a compact village in the borough of Pendle, Lancashire, England, sitting on the lower slopes of Pendle Hill and a short drive from the mill towns of Nelson and Burnley. The setting is rural and scenic, with stone cottages and farmed fields giving way to popular walking country; views often stretch across to the Forest of Bowland and the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal adds to the network of local routes and heritage interest.
Historically the village grew from a rural, craft and quarrying economy and bears the compact, traditional character of many Pennine settlements. Today it functions largely as a residential and rural-commuter community with small local businesses, an active village life and easy access to outdoor recreation; its proximity to sites associated with the 17th‑century Pendle witch trials and to Pendle Hill keeps it on many visitors’ itineraries.
