Nelson in the borough of Pendle, Lancashire, England sits at the foot of Pendle Hill on the edge of the South Pennines, roughly between Burnley and Colne. The town expanded rapidly during the 19th century as a centre for cotton weaving and other mill-based industry, and its stone mills and terraced streets still shape the townscape.

After the decline of textiles, many former mill buildings have been repurposed and the local economy is now mixed, with manufacturing, retail and regeneration projects alongside education at Nelson and Colne College. Nelson also has a lively, diverse community with a significant South Asian population, a local sporting heritage (the town’s football club were early 20th-century members of the Football League) and easy access to walking and heritage tourism linked to Pendle Hill and the area’s famous 17th‑century witch‑trial history.
