Pendle

Local authority district in Lancashire, England

Coordinates:53.88, -2.2
OS grid ref:SD 87 42

Located in eastern Lancashire in England, Pendle is a compact borough dominated by upland moors and the iconic Pendle Hill, which rises sharply above the surrounding market towns. Reservoirs, steep valleys and the western edge of the Pennines give the area a distinctive landscape popular with walkers, while towns such as Nelson, Colne and Barnoldswick provide a contrasting urban ribbon.

The district has a vivid past: the 1612 Pendle witch trials remain a prominent part of local folklore and draw visitors, and much of the built environment reflects a strong textile and mill heritage from the Industrial Revolution. That mix of folklore and industrial archaeology is celebrated in local museums, guided walks and annual events that bring history to life.

Today the economy is mixed, with light manufacturing, local services, agriculture and an expanding visitor sector alongside people who commute to larger urban centres for work. Socially it’s made up of small‑town communities with active regeneration projects and grassroots groups, so while there are areas with economic challenges there is also a strong sense of civic pride and community activity.
