In Rossendale, in the uplands of Lancashire, water is a defining feature: steep valleys funnel the headwaters of the River Irwell and numerous becks into a network of reservoirs and mill ponds. Those fast-flowing streams powered the 18th- and 19th-century textile industry that shaped towns such as Rawtenstall, Haslingden and Bacup, leaving a visible legacy of weirs, canals and mill architecture.
Today the same waters supply local communities, support wildlife in valley reservoirs and peat moorland, and provide popular spots for walking, angling and informal recreation around places like Waterfoot. The mix of industrial archaeology, ongoing water management and countryside conservation gives Rossendale’s waterways a strong historic and social presence in the landscape.
