Rossendale sits in a series of steep valleys in Lancashire, fringed by the open moorland of the West Pennine Moors. The River Irwell and its tributaries have carved the landscape, giving the district a mix of wooded slopes, farmland and dense ribbons of urban settlement centred on towns such as Rawtenstall, Bacup, Haslingden and Whitworth.
The area has a strong industrial heritage from the cotton and wool trades, with former mills, terraces and the pattern of linear settlements still visible. Heritage attractions include the preserved East Lancashire Railway running from Rawtenstall towards Bury, and local arts and community projects that celebrate the district’s Victorian and working‑class past alongside newer creative initiatives.
Today the local economy mixes light manufacturing, retail and tourism, while many residents commute south to Manchester and other regional centres. Outdoor recreation on the moors, farmers’ markets and an active network of community groups contribute to a strong local identity, even as the district works on regeneration and adapting to post‑industrial challenges.
