Whitewell and Stacksteads sit in the steep-sided valley of the River Irwell in the borough of Rossendale, Lancashire, in north-west England. The area feels very much part of the Pennine fringe, with moorland and ridges rising above rows of Victorian terraces and former mill buildings, so it’s popular with walkers who enjoy the local hilltop views and the workaday charm of a small Lancashire valley community.
Historically the settlements grew up around textile mills and associated quarrying and mining, and you can still see converted mill sites and industrial architecture alongside small shops, cafés and pubs. There’s a strong local community identity, ongoing regeneration to adapt old industrial sites, and easy links to nearby towns such as Bacup and Rawtenstall, making it a mix of heritage, residential life and small-scale light industry.
