Belgrave is an inner‑city ward in Leicester, just to the north‑east of the city centre. Its main shopping spine, Belgrave Road, is better known as the Golden Mile - a bustling strip of South Asian jewellery shops, sweet and clothing stores and restaurants. The neighbourhood is a cultural hub for Leicester’s large Gujarati and East African Asian communities and plays host to the city’s spectacular Diwali celebrations, among the biggest outside India.
The area mixes Victorian terraces with more modern housing and includes the 18th‑century Belgrave Hall and its small gardens, which serve as a local focal point. Economically it relies heavily on independent retail and hospitality, and socially it is shaped by strong community networks, multi‑faith places of worship and active local organisations that both celebrate the area’s vibrancy and tackle pockets of deprivation.
