Leicester sits in the heart of the East Midlands on the River Soar, acting as a unitary authority surrounded by Leicestershire. Its central location and strong rail and motorway links make it a natural crossroads for trade and travel.
The city is famously diverse, with a large South Asian community around Belgrave and the so‑called Golden Mile of shops and restaurants; the Diwali celebrations are among the biggest outside India. Two universities, De Montfort University and the University of Leicester, add students, research and cultural life, while retail, logistics and a legacy of textile manufacturing support the economy.
Leicester also has deep historical roots - Roman remains such as the Jewry Wall, a medieval core and the recent rediscovery and reburial of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral - and strong sporting traditions in both Leicester Tigers rugby and Leicester City football. Its compact centre, markets and regular festivals make it an engaging place to visit and live.
