Wigston is a suburban market town in the borough of Oadby and Wigston, in Leicestershire, about four miles south‑east of Leicester. It developed from a small rural settlement into a busy Victorian and Edwardian suburb, with distinct areas such as Wigston Magna and South Wigston, and today reads as a commuter town with a mixture of terraces, later housing and pockets of green space.
Historically it was noted for framework knitting and the hosiery trade, and traces of that industrial past survive alongside independent shops, local markets and community events in the town centre. Its economy and social life are closely linked to nearby Leicester, with good road and bus connections, while a diverse population and active local groups give the place a pragmatic, community‑centred feel rather than a purely residential dormitory character.
