Beckton sits in the east of the London Borough of Newham, on low-lying former marshland beside the Royal Docks and the River Thames. The ward is well connected by the Beckton DLR, and its edges are defined by retail and logistics hubs such as Gallions Reach, with clear commuter links into Canary Wharf and Canning Town.
Historically the area was shaped by heavy industry - most famously the massive Beckton Gasworks - and much of the character today comes from late 20th-century regeneration which replaced factories with housing, parks and retail. The population is socially and culturally diverse, and the neighbourhood mixes council estates and newer developments alongside pockets of green space and riverfront, reflecting the broader economic shift in east London from manufacturing to services, logistics and retail.
