East Ham South is a ward in the east of London, within the borough of Newham. It covers parts of East Ham around the busy shopping spine of Green Street and is served by East Ham station, with a mix of Victorian terraces, interwar housing and post‑war council estates interspersed with small parks and light industrial sites.
The ward is notable for its cultural diversity, with long‑established South Asian communities alongside newer African and Eastern European residents reflected in local shops, places of worship and festivals; the high street still retains a strong independent retail character. Historically part of Essex until 1965 when it joined Greater London, the area grew with late‑19th century rail connections and light industry; today its local economy leans on small businesses and commuting, while housing pressure and regeneration remain prominent social themes.
