Custom House sits in the south of Newham, hugging the banks of the Royal Docks and lying close to London City Airport. The name harks back to the 19th-century customs office that served the busy docks; the neighbourhood grew up as a mix of dockside industry and housing, suffered decline when the docks closed, and is now defined by its waterfront location and remaining industrial heritage.
It’s a culturally diverse, largely residential area with a mix of social housing and newer developments driven by regeneration around the docks. Good transport links - notably the station at Custom House for ExCeL and nearby DLR connections - mean easy access to the ExCeL centre and central London, while ongoing redevelopment aims to bring jobs and amenities even as pockets of social and economic challenge persist compared with neighbouring areas such as Canning Town and Beckton.
