Dereham is a market town in the district of Breckland in central Norfolk, England, lying roughly 15 miles west of Norwich. It occupies gently rolling, agricultural countryside typical of the Breckland area and has long acted as a local service centre and historic coaching stop on routes out of Norwich; the town is often referred to as East Dereham to distinguish it from nearby West Dereham.
Locally the town combines Georgian and Victorian streets with a medieval core and landmarks such as its large parish church and a small local museum. The economy mixes shops, light industry and farming, with a noticeable commuter element to Norwich; community life is punctuated by markets, annual events and a volunteer-run heritage railway and other local groups that keep a strong civic identity.
