Dereham in Breckland, Norfolk, England is a traditional market town with medieval origins, often known locally as East Dereham. Set in the agricultural heart of central Norfolk, it has a compact town centre dominated by the medieval parish church of St Nicholas and a mix of Georgian and Victorian buildings; the town also has a preserved heritage line, the Mid-Norfolk Railway, which reflects its long transport links to the surrounding countryside.
Today Dereham combines retail and light industry with a strong local-service economy, regular markets and a lively community scene of small theatres, festivals and clubs. Its location gives good road and rail access to Norwich and the rest of Norfolk, while the surrounding farmland and village communities keep a distinctly rural Norfolk character.
