Howdon sits on the north bank of the River Tyne within the borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, close to Wallsend and with straightforward Metro and road links into Newcastle and North Shields. The area is largely residential with pockets of light industry and nearby riverside paths, and a Tyne and Wear Metro station gives quick cross‑Tyneside access for commuters.
Historically the neighbourhood’s fortunes have been shaped by the river and the wider shipbuilding and industrial economy of Tyneside, while much of its housing dates from 20th‑century council development. In recent years local regeneration schemes, community groups and sports clubs have been active in improving facilities and tackling social and economic challenges, so Howdon combines a strong local identity with ongoing change tied to the wider North Tyneside economy.
