Drax is a small village and civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England, set amid the flat agricultural landscape of the Humberhead Levels. It sits close to the River Ouse and the market town of Selby, within easy reach of larger Yorkshire centres such as York, and has a character that still feels rural despite nearby industrial activity.
The village is best known for Drax Power Station, one of the largest power stations in the UK, which dominates the skyline and has shaped the local economy for decades, while the surrounding land remains largely arable. Drax also has medieval roots and a traditional parish church (St Peter’s) and maintains a small, community-focused social life with local clubs and annual events that reflect its long-standing rural identity. Historically the area was part of the old West Riding of Yorkshire.
