Long Drax is a small, largely rural parish in the Selby area of North Yorkshire, set on the low-lying, fertile floodplain beside the River Ouse. The landscape is characterised by flat arable fields, meadows and drainage channels, with quiet lanes and riverside stretches that attract walkers and birdwatchers; the nearby town of Selby provides most everyday services.
Historically the locality grew up around river trade and farming, and today the skyline and local economy are markedly influenced by the large industrial presence at Drax Power Station, whose rail and river links still shape transport and employment patterns. With a small, close-knit community, the area keeps a distinctly rural character despite these modern industrial neighbours, and retains pockets of local history, church connections and a strong agricultural identity.
