Fountains Earth is a small, sparsely populated rural parish tucked in the moorland and dales of Nidderdale in North Yorkshire, to the north‑west of Harrogate. It embraces the tiny settlements of Lofthouse and Middlesmoor, sits beside the valley of the River Laver and lies close to Gouthwaite Reservoir, making it popular with walkers and anyone wanting a quiet taste of the Yorkshire countryside.
The area has historic links to Fountains Abbey, which once owned large tracts of the land, and farming - especially sheep grazing - still shapes local life and the economy. Socially it’s a close‑knit rural community centred on village amenities and the little churches and farmsteads, with modest tourism for walking, birdwatching and enjoying the distinctive stone buildings and open moors.
