The civil parish of Hinderwell sits on the coast of North Yorkshire in England, tucked against the heathered slopes of the North York Moors and overlooking stretches of cliff and sandy cove. The coastline includes the well‑known bay at Runswick Bay and lies close to traditional fishing villages such as Staithes, so the area has a strong maritime character and a popular geology for fossil hunters and rock‑pooling families.
Historically the community combined small‑scale fishing, smuggling tales and farming; today the local economy relies largely on tourism, holiday accommodation and agriculture, with walkers attracted by the nearby Cleveland Way. Village life remains important, with community halls, seasonal events and a handful of pubs and shops keeping a distinctly coastal North Yorkshire rhythm within the Borough of Scarborough.
