Loftus is a small former mining town in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, within North Yorkshire, England. It sits on the edge of the North York Moors and not far from the North Sea coast, so the local landscape mixes rolling moorland and dramatic coastline and is popular with walkers and people wanting easy access to the countryside and coastal villages.
The town grew rapidly in the 19th century around ironstone mining and the railway, and that industrial past is still visible in older buildings and local place names. Since the decline of deep mining the economy has diversified into light industry, agriculture, commuting and tourism, with nearby industrial sites such as Boulby and a strong local community life centred on clubs, small shops and village events. The combination of heritage, outdoors access and coastal scenery gives Loftus a quietly resilient character.
