Selby sits on the banks of the River Ouse in North Yorkshire, once a busy medieval port and shipbuilding centre and still dominated by the 12th‑century spire of Selby Abbey. The town’s riverside position and the nearby Selby Canal give it a pleasant network of walks and a strong sense of local history.
Economically it was shaped by the former Selby coalfield and nearby power generation at Drax, but today combines light industry with a compact high street of independents and good rail links for commuters to Leeds and York. Community life is active, with riverside pubs, markets and annual events that reflect its mixed industrial and historic heritage.
