Stanwick St John is a small, rural parish in North Yorkshire, set among rolling arable fields and pasture close to the River Wiske. The settlement clusters around a historic parish church and a handful of farmsteads and cottages; much of local life is shaped by farming and by commuting to nearby market towns such as Bedale and Richmond.
Its most striking feature is the proximity of the nationally important Stanwick Iron Age fortifications, a large hillfort complex associated with the pre-Roman Brigantes that attracts walkers and heritage visitors. Community life is quietly traditional, with conservation of historic buildings, countryside pursuits and occasional village events sustaining a close-knit rural character.
