Thirsk is a compact market town and civil parish in North Yorkshire, sitting close to the southern edge of the North York Moors within the district of Hambleton. It retains a traditional market-town feel with narrow streets, independent shops and a regular market, and is well connected by road and rail to larger centres which helps a mix of local trade, commuting and light industry.
The town is perhaps best known as the real-life base of the vet and author James Herriot, with a popular museum drawing visitors, and for Thirsk Racecourse and other agricultural events that reflect the surrounding farming economy. Historic buildings, local festivals and easy access to moorland walking make it a small but lively hub for both residents and visitors.
