Thornton-le-Dale is a picture‑postcard village in Ryedale, North Yorkshire, England, sitting close to the southern edge of the North York Moors. A meandering stream, Thornton Beck, runs through the cobbled square and beneath quaint stone and thatched cottages into a shallow duck pond, giving the place a much‑photographed, timeless feel; the village is also only a few miles from Pickering, a handy base for moorland walks and coastal excursions.
Historically agricultural, Thornton-le-Dale now leans heavily on tourism and local craft and hospitality businesses - tearooms, galleries and small shops occupy many of the old buildings - while still retaining a close‑knit community and a number of centuries‑old listed houses and a parish church. Its attractive streets and riverside setting have made it popular with walkers, day‑trippers and occasional film and television crews, so there’s a mix of everyday village life and steady visitor trade.
