Otterburn is a small village in Northumberland, England, tucked into the upland valley of Redesdale beside the River Rede and overlooked by the moors of the Cheviot Hills. It sits beside the large Otterburn Ranges, a military training area whose occasional live firing is a familiar part of the local soundscape.
The village is best known for the 1388 Battle of Otterburn, celebrated in medieval ballads, and today draws walkers, history enthusiasts and birdwatchers to its open landscapes. Locally the economy is a mix of hill farming, forestry, the ranges’ presence and modest tourism, with a small tight‑knit community and a handful of shops and cafés serving visitors to this remote corner of Northumberland.
